Getting started

Seven steps, five of which are already done for you or take a minute. The Setup page carries the same checklist and marks off what you have finished.

  1. Install it

Any Slack workspace admin can install Hashoff from the install link. Approve the permissions and you land in the web app, signed in. Whoever installs it becomes the first administrator.

  2. Your people are already there

Your whole Slack workspace is imported on install — nobody is typed in by hand. Anyone who is a Slack owner or admin starts with the matching role here. Check People, and press Sync from Slack if somebody joined in the meantime.

  3. Decide on teams

Everybody starts on a team called Global, so the product works immediately. A team answers one question: who approves this person's leave. If one group of people approves for everyone, you are already done. Otherwise create teams on Teams and move people across.

  4. Name the approvers

On each team, choose who decides its requests. Name two or three so nothing waits on one person's holiday — the first to press Approve settles it. An approver needs no particular role, and does not have to be on the team. Name nobody and requests fall to your owners and admins.

  5. Set the allowances

Paid Time Off, Sick Leave and Unpaid Leave are created for you. Open Policies and set the numbers you actually give. While you are there you can choose who gets each type, whether half days are allowed, and whether unused days carry over — all on one page, saved in one go.

  6. Give each team a countryOptional

On Teams, set the country a team works in. That decides which public holidays its people observe, and so how many days a request actually costs. Put people who keep different calendars on different teams.

  7. Import the public holidaysOptional

On Locations, import the calendar for any of 152 countries. Without this, leave taken across a public holiday is charged as an ordinary day. You can add your own company days too, including ones that repeat each year.

Then tell your team

They do not need an account or a password — they are already in it. In Slack:

  • /hashoff request books time off
  • /hashoff balance says what is left
  • /hashoff who shows who is away today
  • /hashoff holidays lists the public holidays you observe

A bare /hashoff lists the commands. Opening the Hashoff app in Slack does the same without typing anything.
